If you ever come across a post that failed with the error message "Error validating access token", this guide will help you understand what is causing it and how to fix it.

The Cause

There are a few reasons why this issue may occur. The most basic being a recent password change has made Facebook require a re-authentication (reconnection) of your profile.

Here are the reasons, by network:

Facebook Page

  • The personal Facebook profile used to connect this Facebook page had a recent password change.
  • The personal Facebook profile used to connect this Facebook page has been logged into using devices it normally is not used with. Examples would be logging into the same FB personal profile across multiple computers or phones.
  • The personal Facebook profile used to connect this Facebook page has been logged into in a different IP address, city, state, or country than it is usually used in. An example would be if you travel outside your usual city and login to your personal Facebook profile there.

These are the reasons Facebook may invalidate the access token, or take back the key, they gave Social Report to be able to access your Page.

Instagram Business Profile

First, it's important to understand how an Instagram Business Profile is connected. Business Profiles have the "Business" status because they are converted using a Facebook Page.

The status of this Facebook page is important for this Instagram Business Profile.

The connection hierarchy might be better understood as "FB Personal Profile > Facebook Page > Instagram Business Profile."

Simply put, you connect to Social Report using your Personal Facebook Profile, then you give us access to both the Facebook Page & the Instagram Business profile it's related to.

By understanding the relationship between Instagram & Facebook, you'll understand the causes all have to do with the Facebook Personal Profile you used to connect:

  • The personal Facebook profile used to connect this Instagram Business Profile had a recent password change.
  • The personal Facebook profile used to connect this Instagram Business Profile has been logged into using devices it normally is not used with. Examples would be logging into the same FB personal profile across multiple computers or phones.
  • The personal Facebook profile used to connect this Instagram Business Profile has been logged into in a different IP address, city, state, or country than it is usually used in. An example would be if you travel outside your usual city and login to your personal Facebook profile there.
  • The personal Facebook profile used to connect this Instagram Business Profile is no longer an Admin of the Facebook Page associated with it.

Note: If you manage more than 1 Facebook Page or Instagram Business Profile and have connected all of them with the same Facebook Personal Profile, when this issue occurs, it will happen to multiple Pages/Business Profiles at the same time.

The Fix

Luckily, the fix here is extremely simple!

All you have to do is reconnect the Facebook Page or Instagram Business Profile.

Note: DO NOT delete the profile from Social Report or you will lose all your data. Reconnect using the steps below. You should also make sure you reconnect the Page/Profile to the correct Project.

1. Head to Connect Profiles

2. Select Facebook or Instagram Business Profile

3. Select your Page or Business Profile & click OK

Once you've reconnected the Pages and/or Business Profiles - go ahead and schedule a test post, you should be good to go!
